Some home renovations start with inspiration. Others start with necessity. This featured remodel turned a major water disaster into a fresh start!
This month's featured remodel began its journey with an unexpected phone call, one that ultimately led to a full-scale transformation, guided from start to finish by the Maverick team.
Located in Greenwood Village, Colorado, this project was the result of a significant water damage event that impacted nearly every level of the home. What followed was a complex, multi-phase renovation that required technical problem-solving, close coordination with insurance, and the kind of thoroughness Maverick is known for.
When a Small Detail Becomes a Big Problem
The root of the issue started in the primary bathroom, where a clawfoot tub experienced a catastrophic failure. The homeowners were out of town when one of the tub’s feet broke. Unfortunately when this happened, the tub fell slightly over pulling the plumbing connections up through the floor. Cast iron clawfoot tubs are heavy! Because the tub filler was directly attached to the tub, the water supply lines snapped and caused water to run unnoticed for a full week.
The leak was first spotted by the homeowner’s landscaper, who noticed unusual water patterns outside the home. Shortly after, the individual house-sitting for the homeowners discovered water spread throughout the interior. By that point, the damage had already traveled far beyond the bathroom.
Half of the main level flooded, flooring throughout the home was ruined, and the water made its way into the lower level flooding the entire finished basement area. What began as a single bathroom issue quickly turned into a whole-home restoration and remodel. Fortunately, that’s what we do - renew lives by renewing homes.
Immediate Action: Mitigation and Dry-Out
Once Maverick got the call, the priority was clear. Stop the damage and stabilize the home. As is normal in situations such as this, the homeowners insurance got involved.
Due to an insurance claim, the mitigation, demolition and the dry-out process was all handled by the homeowner’s insurance provider. The immediate removal of the damaged materials and thoroughly drying the structure helped prevent further complications and laid the groundwork for rebuilding.
With any water damage, early mitigation, removal of damaged materials and the required time to ensure all water had dried is critical, and in this case, was essential in the success of this home remodel.
A Hidden HVAC Issue (and Why Catching It Early Matters)
After demolition, and once our team started, we uncovered something unexpected. The home didn’t use a standard HVAC setup. Instead, it had a high-flow system with insulated tubing, and that tubing was impacted by the flooding.
As the flooding happened, water was actively being pulled through the system, creating odor issues throughout the house. At first, it seemed like mold. But the real culprit was trapped moisture inside the ventilation system itself. Catching this mid-project meant pausing, reassessing, and doing things the right way.
Maverick worked directly with insurance to secure supplemental coverage for new HVAC tubing and the specialized subcontractor needed to reinstall it properly. While this did add time to the project, it prevented much larger issues down the line, and that’s a trade Maverick was willing to make.
Going Beyond the Obvious
Even after the ventilation system was cleared, a lingering odor remained. Rather than stopping at “good enough,” Maverick dug deeper. The solution? Bringing in a boiler specialist.
That inspection revealed a methane gas leak tied to the boiler system, an issue completely separate from the original water damage, but one that posed a serious safety concern. The boiler was corrected and reworked, eliminating the odor and ensuring the home was not only beautiful again, but safe.
This is where Maverick truly stands apart. Water damage projects often uncover layered issues, and this team consistently goes the extra mile to address everything, not just what’s visible.
Rebuilding from the Ground Up
With mitigation complete and hidden systems corrected, the remodel phase could begin.
The scope was extensive:
New hardwood flooring throughout the entire main level
A full basement remodel
A redesigned entryway
Repairs to subflooring where wood had delaminated due to prolonged moisture exposure
Water damage often causes wood to swell and separate, so sections of subfloor had to be removed and rebuilt to ensure long-term stability and performance.
Every space was approached with durability, flow, and livability in mind. We brought the home back stronger than before.
Designing Remotely (Without a Designer)
This project also came with a unique logistical challenge, the homeowners didn’t live in the home during construction.
Being a repeat Maverick client helped establish trust, but working remotely still required extra communication and coordination. There was no dedicated Designer on this project, so design decisions came from multiple directions including homeowner input, Maverick’s team, and our trusted subcontractors.
It was a hands-on process that relied heavily on experience, adaptability, and problem-solving.
One standout example came in the basement. A cabinet to the left of the refrigerator was originally meant to be a framed wall. Because the space wasn’t seen by Maverick prior to the insurance company performing mitigation, our team was unaware of the original wall. Once our client informed us of the original wall that was now missing, and rather than backtrack extending our time and materials, Maverick adjusted on the fly and instead recommended a cabinet install. This cabinet offered more storage, function and aesthetics. Our client was thrilled and moved forward with the cabinet.
The Final Result
What began as a water-damage emergency ended with a full-home refresh. Completed thoughtfully, safely, and with long-term value in mind, this project hits our favorite home remodels list.
The homeowners were thrilled with the outcome, not only because their home was renewed, but because issues they didn’t even know existed were resolved along the way. That satisfaction has directly led this client booking additional home remodels with Maverick. This is one of the best indicators of success, and we are thrilled to be their trusted home remodeling contractor in Colorado.
The Maverick Approach to Renovation
