There is a reason for our ‘Wizard of Oz’ reference - designing your kitchen can either be a real ride through a tornado or a smooth ride through the clouds on a hot air balloon. Much like Dorothy experienced, following the yellow brick road through your kitchen design really does lead to the Emerald City!
So let’s follow the yellow brick road together!
Two of the most major design aspects to consider when remodeling your kitchen are your appliances and cabinets. It’s always best to understand the cost of both before designing your space. Let’s start with cabinets.
Cabinets differ in price based on their customizability - meaning, the more you can customize, the more the price tag rises. Cabinets come in an array of colors, materials, size, shape, and customizability. Understanding what you’d like in cabinets, as well as cost, is good to know prior to purchasing appliances. Ovens built into cabinets happen to be very popular. More mass produced cabinetry or even semi-custom lines will not cut the opening for an oven to fit. So it’s typically up to the installer to physically cut the opening, which isn’t always the best look. Another very popular design aesthetic are cabinet door fronts on refrigerators. Some cabinet lines cannot accommodate the custom sizes, especially with luxury brand appliances.
We talked with our colleague, Kathy Fischer from the Home Clearance Center (one of our preferred vendors for over 15 years), to get a bit more information on cabinets. Kathy let us know that two of their most popular lines of cabinetry are Diamond Cabinets, a company that has been around for over fifty years, and Showplace Cabinetry, an employee-owned company that happens to create very customizable cabinets. Home Clearance Center also focuses on products that are all created here at home, in the USA. Like Maverick, Home Clearance Center focuses on spatial design so that you can ensure every inch of your kitchen is utilized in the best possible way. Education is key to both our team and the team at Home Clearance Center.
Appliances are an entirely different beast. Most clients have an idea of the appliances they would like to add into their new kitchen before purchasing cabinets. Appliances are typically based on two things: culinary use or optics. Our colleague, Seth Mattock of Mountain High Appliances (another preferred vendor of Maverick Home Remodeling, Inc. who we’ve worked with for over six years), let us know that it’s always best to understand what you’re looking for in an appliance before choosing a brand. Seth mentioned that purchasing appliances is typically based on need, function and look. Seth also mentioned that some of the hottest brands are Thermador, Subzero and Wolf. And surprisingly, 48 - 60 inch ranges have been incredibly huge this year, which we assume has to do with so many people staying home throughout 2020.
As we mentioned with cabinets, appliances are typically chosen first. Seth noted that this is better as cabinets can be modified but appliances cannot. And, 2020 brought the steamed oven into popularity, although it’s been around for five years, and interest grew significantly in the past few months. Mountain High Appliances does a lot of steam oven demos and Seth has invited all of our readers to join him for a demo!
Seth also noted current turnaround time for appliance orders with Mountain High Appliance are 2 - 6 months out due to high demand. It seems our time spent at home last year has reminded us how important is our living space!
Like Dorothy said as she clicked her ruby red slippers, “there’s no place like home!”
