Heart of the House: The Kitchen

If you’ve recently been out to your local Michaels or Hobby Lobby retail stores, you’ll notice several hanging signs that read, “The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home” - and there is a reason for that.  Not only is the kitchen the space you spend several hours of your day in, it’s the part of the home that helps to sustain very necessary elements to life - food and water.  In addition to crafting meals that nourish the entire family, most use the kitchen daily as a gathering place for conversation and bonding, finishing up homework, an end of day brief or to relax over a glass of wine.  Whatever the case, the kitchen is the center of the home or shall we say, “The heart of the house.”

And as we approach Valentine’s Day, why not focus on the heart of your house?  It’s a new year, so let’s put some love into your kitchen.  Several elements go into creating your perfect kitchen.  Your space needs to reflect you, your family and how you live your life.  How big is your family?  What’s your style?  Do you like modern or the traditions from your upbringing?  Do you only cook in the kitchen or do you use it as a gathering spot?  Do you throw parties where you need a big island to display your spread or just need counter space and gadgets to cook like Julia Childs?  The questions are endless.  But ultimately, you want a kitchen that is going to fit within your lifestyle.

Adam Berlin, President of Maverick Home Remodeling, Inc., always says, “The rooms with running water always produce the highest ROI.”  And according to Zillow.com, the average return on investment (ROI) for a kitchen remodel, from minor to major project, is 64.5%. That means, if you are spending $100k on a kitchen remodel, you are looking at an increase of $64,500 in property value, which may be recovered once you sell your home.  “And enjoy your investment now while living in your home”, says Adam.  “It is so important to love the home you are in and the kitchen is the best place to start.”  If you want to learn a little more about which home remodeling projects pay off, visit our previous post on, “Home Remodeling Projects That Pay Off.”

The way you choose your layout and accessories, like appliances, lighting, cabinets, backsplash and features, will not only have a lot of weight for loving your new space but also your home’s value.  The more enhancements, the more opportunity of return.  So splurge on elements that will help you function better, look incredible and bring you ROI.  And don’t skimp on your cabinets and appliances - these babies are worth the investment.  Check out our previous article on appliances here.

Your kitchen should be a place you adore!  You should feel inspired to cook meals or sit at your oversized island helping your kiddos with their math homework while simultaneously charging your cell phone from the easily accessible USB port on your kitchen island.  (Yes, we can do that for you!)  Or even simply sitting in the gorgeous ambient lighting while you enjoy a midnight snack. But whatever your use, your kitchen should be the room in your home that brings you joy… The heart of your house.
