Realistic Home Remodeling Timelines

So you’ve recently read our blog on Realistic Remodeling Budgets and think to yourself, “Okay, but how long will it take to finish?” Great question! There are many different aspects of a home remodel that can impact the timeline of your project. But before your project even begins construction, you need to put in the time to define the details and design of the project. We like to allow 90 days, on average, to start the planning of a home remodeling project.

Our home remodeling projects are broken down into two steps: pre-construction and construction. Pre-construction, our first step, consists of two phases (pictured below). The 90-day lead time mentioned above allows us to travel through the two phases so we can get the details nailed down (budget, design, materials, etc.). After we have established all goals for our upcoming project, then construction can begin.

Once we are ready for construction, the size and scope of the project will dictate the timeline of your project. The timeline of a kitchen remodel usually takes longer than a bathroom. And a basement finish may take longer than a kitchen. But ultimately, one project can take less time than another pending if it is a basic renovation or a more complex remodel. For example, are we removing supporting walls? Are we significantly changing the floor-plan? All of these aspects of a remodel will impact the timeline. Take a look below to see the average home remodeling timelines based on a basic remodeling project.

Kitchen

  • 8 - 10 weeks

Bathroom

  • 6 - 8 weeks

Basement

  • 10 - 12 weeks

Deck

  • 2 - 3 weeks

Whole House

  • 3.5 - 4 months

Other factors may impact your timeline. The availability of materials can either minimally impact a remodel or can majorly push it behind. Depending on material delivery, the impact can cause a domino-effect and cause installation delays. For example, the cabinets selected are backordered by 8 weeks and will delay the countertop installation. Possibly the unique stone slab selected for the countertops is quarried in Italy and is being delivered on the slow boat. On the flip side, if appliances are backordered, we may be able to proceed with cabinet installation.

Our team prefers to keep projects moving. So if there are product delays, we will jump to another task to minimally impact our timeline. Communication is key for our clients so there are no surprises.

Another determining factor of a timeline are permits and inspections. From the onset, a building permit can delay your project. Once a building permit is issued, then we have to prepare for inspections. On average, a remodeling project will have at least 14 inspections. You typically lose one day per inspection. These typical delays are always built into our timelines, which are given once we have completed phase 1 and phase 2 of pre-construction services noted above.

One question our team is often asked is if their timeline can be positively impacted by our “slow” season. When it comes to home remodeling, there is no slow season. Winter is just as busy as fall and spring is just as busy as summer. There are, however, better times of the year to do certain remodeling projects due to the weather of that season. For example, you wouldn't want to do a pop-top during the winter months due to weather conditions causing delays. Conversely, a deck remodel would be better in the spring than in the heat of summer.

With that, it is never too early to start planning your home remodeling project! Planning early gives you the opportunity to ensure your project is exactly what you’d like it to be with minimal hiccups along the way. Construction can always be scheduled for a future date.

Our team is always available to answer any of your questions regarding your project timeline. We’d also love the opportunity to renew your life and renew your home. Contact us below to discuss your future home remodeling projects!
