“Winter is coming”... for those of you who are “Game of Thrones” fans.  And so, this is the perfect opportunity to update your living space in time for our first snow of the season.  And what better way to get cozy than with your fireplace. It’s time to update yours now!

So what makes a good fireplace? Really, it depends on what you like or what makes sense for your style, design and space. Options include wood-burning fireplace, pellet stove, gas fireplace, electric fireplace and bioethanol fireplace. All options have their pros and cons. And depending on your design style, some will make sense while others won’t.

  • Wood-burning, in most cases, have become the fireplace of the past. Well, at least indoors that is. A great fire-pit in the backyard is always a great addition. Indoors though, wood-burning fireplaces require a chimney, build up soot, a lot of maintenance and don’t efficiently heat your home.

  • Pellet stoves are a great option, especially when you lean towards an old-fashioned design aesthetic. Wood pellets are relatively inexpensive, burn clean and efficiently, and offer good warmth. Maintenance is lower due to the removable ash pan located at the bottom of the stove.

  • Gas fireplace is a great option for homeowners. It requires no chimney, is relatively easy to install, can be turned on with the push of a button and becomes instantly warm once turned on. This fireplace surrounded by a wall of stone makes for a beautiful feature in a living space.

  • Electric fireplaces have become quite popular. Since it is an appliance, there are no toxic fumes and is far less expensive than wood-burning or gas fireplaces. Like the gas fireplace, an electric fireplace heats immediately and can be lit with the flip of a switch. That said, if your power goes out, your electric fireplace will, too.

  • Bioethanol fireplace runs on neither gas, flame or electricity. Bioethanol is a clean-burning fuel which offers a beautiful flame. It does not produce much heat and does run on the expensive side. If you love a modern look or are looking for a design feature, this is the route to go.

We recommend installing a gas or electric fireplace into your living space. Make your fireplace the feature in your living room or great room. Use stone, granite, slate, tile or limestone and choose a mantelpiece that stands out. Take a look at some of our favorite fireplaces below.
