Who doesn’t love a good DIY project? They’re proactive, ingenious, and that feeling of accomplishment is seriously profound in the best way possible! Do-it-yourself projects have swept the nation for decades and continue to be a popular method of customization. We’ve all been there… watching HGTV shows and spending countless hours scrolling through Youtube for that perfect DIY tutorial. They look so easy to do, right? You gather your desired materials, follow step-by-step instructions… and then, if you’re lucky, you have an amazing result! Unfortunately, not all of us have such luck.

Perhaps you’ve been feeling crafty and are actively thinking about starting a new DIY project for your home. Renovations like applying wallpaper, replacing cabinets, installing new backsplashes or even updating those drab looking floors can certainly keep you busy and get those creative juices flowing! But these fun ventures can take quite a disastrous turn when executed inaccurately. The last thing you want is for all of your beautiful, hard work to be for not.  Or possibly cause an even bigger issue that made things worse than before you started. That’s why it’s worth meeting with a DIY consultant to gain better understanding of the necessary steps that it takes to successfully accomplish a DIY project - The first time!

Planning Ahead:

Preparation is the best way to ensure a successful and foolproof DIY project. It’s imperative to be detailed and thorough in order to comprehend the fundamental phases that are required throughout the planning process. There are steps to a project. Miss a step and you could be doing things over! Do you need a permit? When will your materials be available? What must go in first? There are many questions to ask when preparing for your project. This will ultimately save you time, money and quite possibly a few headaches along the way.

Do Your Research:

From bathrooms to kitchens, research is really going to be your best friend throughout your DIY journey. Gathering a sufficient amount of information will not only educate you more about the project, but will also help you recognize what it is that you want. Research is the perfect step to start assembling inspiration such as, surfing the internet for ideas and reviewing Maverick’s project galleries here. Take your inspiration further by starting a Pinterest board. And afterwards, consult with your remodeling experts - That’s us!

Budget

In order to DIY successfully, set a budget and stick to it. This of course goes back to doing ample research, and knowing how much things like materials and other elements will cost. We automatically think that “DIY” means “Affordable or Cheap”, which is not ALWAYS the case. Supplies add up quicker than you think, and it’s easy to lose track of your budget when not being mindful.

Equipment:

A seamless project requires the right equipment to get the job done. If you’re lucky, you might even have most tools/equipment already available around the house. If not, it might be the time to invest in some new equipment, like safety and protective gear. Just because you’re doing it yourself, doesn’t mean that you don’t have to still be careful. Make sure you have gear like masks, gloves and whatever else you need to ensure safety! Being familiar with how to use power tools isn’t a bad idea either!

Know when to ask for help and consult a professional:

DIY projects are a lot of work, especially if you’re unsure about one or more steps. Consulting with a professional can prevent serious damages to yourself and your home,  all while guiding you in the right direction. As we mentioned before, you don’t want to make any mistakes that will cost you additional time and money, so doing it right the first time is vital. This, of course, begins with consulting.
