Fall Checklist For Home Maintenance

Sweater weather is coming! And that means it’s time for your home’s seasonal maintenance. Taking steps now is key to keeping your home looking and functioning great as you transition into winter months.

We wish all we needed to do to prepare for fall was to break out the throw blankets and candles, and buy a decorative gourd or two. But unfortunately, being a homeowner comes with responsibilities. While everything may seem tip-top now, winter storms can bring cold temperatures, power failures, etc., and a little maintenance now will make your life easier later.

Pro Tip:  Do the outdoor tasks first. You can do the indoor ones even after the weather turns.

Consider this checklist everything you need to do to transition your home for autumn. Have a look!

  • Drain outside faucets & winterize the sprinkler system.

  • Fill cracks in driveway & reseal as needed.

  • Clean gaps between deck boards.

  • Clean out your gutters.

  • Bring your outdoor furniture in.

  • Fertilize your lawn.

  • Test winter equipment. (Snowplow, shovels, etc.)

  • Test smoke & carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Clean fire extinguishers. Refill or replace as needed.

  • Pour water down unused drains.

  • Drain water heater.

  • Clean or change your filters.

  • Check septic system drain for flooding.

  • Service fireplace(s).

  • Check for drafts.
How To:  Check for draft issues by turning off any appliances that create an air disturbance. Then, walk around with a lit candle or a stick of incense. If the flame flickers or burns out, a draft is near.

We hope these fall maintenance tips have inspired you to take charge. (Repeat after us: I WILL check these off by December 1st!) These kinds of tasks may seem tedious, but neglecting them can lead to costly repairs.
