7 Kitchen Design Trends for 2023

From small changes like adding built-in storage to remodels that implement smart assistants, home improvements can renew your home and your quality of life. Last year we predicted Remodeling Trends for 2023 You’d Want to Steal – and boy, did we guess right!! Now that the new year has arrived, it’s time to buckle down and start putting our plans into action. Where to start, you ask? We say high-traffic areas of the home, like your kitchen.

Kitchen remodeling is a challenging task. There’s a lot to think about, from the layout to the appliances to the color story.

We put on our trend-forecasting hats and used our combined decades of experience to list the top kitchen design trends for your 2023 remodel. Take a look!

1. Creative Cabinetry

Remodeling trends for 2023 are all about innovative storage solutions that make the most of compact spaces. Leverage your cabinets for more storage with:

  • Deep drawers

  • Trash and recycling pull-outs

  • Built-in utensil caddies

  • A stand mixer lift or pull-out

  • Baking sheet, cutting board, and platter storage

  • A large Lazy Susan or blind corner pullout

  • Pull out shelves

  • Charging drawer/tech command center

  • Spice-holder

  • Knife holder

  • Microwave cabinet

  • Under-cabinet lighting

There are plenty of ways to customize your cabinets for your remodel. When you have your consultation, bring ideas for your storage needs!

2. Dedicated Coffee Station

Why settle for a basic bar? A designated beverage area is a great way to free up food prep areas– and it doesn’t need to include alcohol!

Love coffee? Make your relationship official in 2023 with an in-house coffee bar.

Pro Tip: Paint it or use bold appliances to add pops of color to your neutral kitchen/dining area.

3. Reimagined Islands

The art of balancing comfort and style is everything in a family home. That’s why many homeowners are opting for larger kitchen islands to accommodate dining and entertaining directly in the kitchen rather than the formal dining room. This means larger kitchen islands will be integrated into remodels to accommodate larger gatherings.

Already have an island? One of the best ways to inject color into your kitchen without construction is to paint your island base.

If you’re ready for an upgrade, improved kitchen islands now come with neatly built-in features like pet-feeding stations, extra storage, and more!

4. Warm Colors

We’re seeing a lot of earthy tones in the kitchen for 2023.

While white will continue to be a popular choice for kitchens in 2023–and possibly all time–we can expect to see kitchens get a bit more colorful this year. Trends show homeowners embracing warmer tones and bold pops of color rather than monochromatic, Scandinavian-style minimalism or white and gray farmhouse-style kitchens.

Areas like your backsplash, coffee station, island, or cabinets are perfect for adding creative color combinations without committing to repainting the entire room.

Read our blog, How to Choose the Right Color Palette for Your Home, for tips on the right hues for you.

5. Let There Be Light

Lighting trends will be everywhere this year. While all kitchens need lights for practical use, lighting design is one way to let your personality really shine through.

Kitchen lighting trends for you to consider:

  • Recessed lighting

  • Under-cabinet lighting

  • Interior cabinet lighting, especially for glass cabinet doors

  • Over-scaled chandeliers and statement pendants

  • Layered lighting – multiple options that provide a variety of moods for the same room.

  • Special table lamps – including portable LED lamps, like this one from Wayfair.

LED lighting is something we will see more of in 2023 and beyond. Consider this energy-saving alternative when designing your space.

Pro Tip: Keep electrical outlets in mind! Having new lighting installed is also the perfect time to install or update electrical outlets that include USB and USB-C outlets for phones.

6. Get Smart

Every aspect of our lives is being impacted and made easier in some way by new smart technologies and advances, and your kitchen shouldn’t be left behind.

Smart kitchens aren’t just convenient, but they help to save time and energy. For your 2023 kitchen remodel, consider if any of the following wifi-controlled appliances or systems are right for you:

  • Voice-activated appliances

  • Smart touchless faucets

  • Smart touchless lights

  • Speaker system throughout kitchen/dining for music and entertainment

  • Charging stations

  • Hidden screens

  • And more!

7. Best Appliances

If a “smart” kitchen isn’t your cup of tea, you can still bring your kitchen into the 21st century with one of more of the best appliances of 2023:

  • KitchenAid Stand Mixer – this classic is never going out of style.

  • Digital air fryer for healthier fried options

  • Smart toaster oven

  • Food-processor

  • Pressure cooker

  • Electric kettle

  • Personal blenders - like the Magic Bullet

  • Espresso machine – a stunning centerpiece for your new coffee station!

  • Sous vide precision cooker

  • Small wine fridge
