family preparing their home for vacation

With spring break and summer vacations approaching, there’s no time like the present to start planning your family getaway! If you’re fortunate enough to be able to travel, planning ahead has tremendous benefits, from saving you money to giving you more options to limiting the stress of the last-minute scramble. We’re here to remind you that no matter the length of your travels, it’s vital to always prepare your home for an extended leave.

In the midst of frantically packing, it's easy to forget obvious things. Take time now to safeguard your house, your pets, plants, and your belongings while you’re off jet-setting.

Use this checklist to prepare your home for an extended vacation:

  • Clean our your fridge

  • Run the dishwasher

  • Run the washer and dryer

  • Wash bedding and make bed so you can enjoy that maid-ready sleep upon your return!

  • Take out your trash

  • Clean or tidy up your home

  • Prepare your exterior for the elements

  • Mow the lawn

  • Protect your pipes - If your home is empty while you are gone, turn off the water to your house. (Be sure to open the faucets and shower/tub valves to let the water drain out.  When you return home and turn your water back on, don’t be surprised to hear some hissing and spurting as your pipes refill.)

  • Unplug most appliances, especially during thunderstorm season

  • Program your thermostat - Smart Thermostats offer an “away” setting that will adjust the temperature setting when you're not home

  • Secure valuables out of sight including out of sight of windows

  • Lock all exterior doors and windows - Don’t forget the garage!

  • Set timers on interior lights to create the appearance that you are home

  • Set outside lights on timers or motion sensors - one in front and one out back

  • Water indoor plants

  • Keep your house plants cool by closing the blinds or shades so they need less water

  • Use watering bulbs to water plants for up to two weeks

  • Protect your vehicle

  • Check garage for critters

  • Check for and put away any objects or tools outside that can be used to break in

  • Check your home insurance - Does it remain valid while you’re away or when you let a house-sitter come in occasionally? If your answer is yes, you’re practically guaranteed a carefree vacation.

  • Arrange a sitter or boarding for pets with detailed instructions

  • Take care of your mail and deliveries - Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to pick up mail or deliveries or request a hold for up to 30 days from the USPS.

  • Alert your home security company of your travel dates

  • Contact your local police department and request a “vacation check” or “extra patrol”

  • Don’t post on social media when you are out of town. You’ll tip off thieves in your absence! Wait to post all about your trip when you return home.

  • Check-in with your home security system app on your mobile phone

These tips are pretty straightforward but easy to forget when you’ve got vacation on your mind! Next time you’re going away, keep your home safe using the above checklist.
