Spring is around the corner. Nature’s reminder to renew and rejuvenate after winter. Around this time, we like to check in with ourselves since the new year. How are those resolutions… er, commitments coming along? Are we happy with the year’s progress so far?
By February/March, many people are still committing to their gym membership or new diet plans – but what about our home maintenance goals?
This is your reminder to give your home some TLC as spring unfolds. Not only will your house look better with a big spring clean, but it will boost creativity and motivation.
If you’re like us, the most challenging part of cleaning is letting go of items we’ve become attached to. But we have good news! Cleaning and organizing will allow you to create new storage solutions – so you can keep what you love while your home stays pristine.
To make things easy, the Maverick team has put together this spring home maintenance checklist with space-saving tips. Take a look to renew your home - and your life - in the new season.
Spring Home Maintenance Checklist
Deep clean inside and out
Divide tasks by room, working top to bottom, so you don’t miss any areas.
Make a note of what repairs are needed as you clean. Arrange to have them fixed before they get worse or cause expensive damage.
Address winter damage
Like your skin, your home needs a little extra attention after the harsh winter days. Touch up caulking, paint, and any damage to your facade.
Clean the exterior of your house
Weed flower beds and replant if needed
Test smoke & carbon monoxide detectors
Generally, your detectors should be checked twice a year (usually in the fall and spring).
Clean off dust and replace batteries as needed
Check fire extinguishers & refill or replace as needed
Examine thermostat for accuracy
Replace / clean furnace units
Change / clean furnace filter
Drain approximately two gallons from the water heater to eliminate sediment
Pour 1 gallon of water down unused drains
Check the attic for birds, squirrels, raccoons, bird nests, etc.
Have air ducts cleaned
Clean kitchen disposal by grinding several cups of ice cubes + lemon rinds
Clean frost-free refrigerator drain pan
Inspect dishwasher connections for leaks
Clean coils in the rear of your refrigerator unit(s)
Clean your clothes dryer vent duct
Examine, repair & replace caulk around tub & shower
Vacuum vent covers in bathroom
Tune up lawn mower
Clean debris from gutters & ensure downspouts are free of obstruction
Check basement for dampness/leaks following a rainstorm
Check plumbing shut-off valves and ensure that they turn off & on freely
Check all decks, patios, porches, stairs & railings for deterioration
Check the septic system drain field for flooding
Check the lawn sprinkler system for leaky valves & exposed lines
Space-saving Solutions
Declutter:
Sort, file, and dispose of documents, mail, magazines, and any other unwanted papers littering surfaces around the house.
Be sure to shred old bills or any documents with your personal information before throwing them away.
Organize your closets:
Gather and store out-of-season clothing, sportswear, and other items.
Throw out or donate what you no longer wear.
Toss anything that is too worn.
Use a wardrobe box with a hanging rod to keep your clothes looking good in storage.
Deep clean your closet.
Donate items:
Reassess what's taking up the countertop and closet space.
Store or donate infrequently-used appliances and other items.
Consider self storage:
Consider a storage unit for items you don’t use year-round. If a separate unit doesn’t make sense for you, carve out storage in a less-busy part of your home, like the basement, attic, shed, etc.
