Remodeling Advice from a Project Manager

This month we asked our Project Manager, Paul Moore, what advice he has for homeowners when doing a remodeling project.  In true form, Paul's advice reflects good old fashion adage.

  • Communication is key

  • Mindset matters

  • Patience is a virtue

Communication is key, if not crucial, when doing a remodeling project.  This starts day one in the Handoff Meeting, after the contract is signed, where sales and the production team meet with the homeowner.  At this time, we all review the scope of work and expectations of the project, define preferred communication mediums and address all safety requirements so everyone is on the same page.  Throughout the project, your Project Manager will have weekly meetings with the homeowners to go over the schedule, review who will be onsite working, and discuss any concerns.  Paul notes the importance of continuous communication to keep everyone apprised and the project moving forward.  “Over-communication is best. Send me a text, regardless of time of day, so I can address the matter by the following day. I will respond immediately, but also allow me the necessary time to do the research and provide the most ideal solution.”  It's super important for the homeowner to address any concerns right away.

Mindset matters when your house becomes a construction zone.  The project area is a business during the appointed hours.  There will be noise and dust.  Our team makes every effort to keep the work space clean, tidy and safe, but we need the space to do the work to make your dream come true.  Preparing yourself for this temporary lifestyle is essential for you and your family. One can get frustrated having other people in their home and rooms being unavailable during construction.  Instead use this time to be creative and have fun with other areas of your home.  For example, make an “at-home camping trip with the kids” by setting up tents in an unused room and using the porch as BBQ central.  Some folks actually go on vacation during their remodel!  Being flexible and fun makes the experience much easier.

Patience is a virtue, especially towards the end of the project.  It's exciting to see the crew tear-out your old tub.  "It's really happening. We are remodeling our bathroom!"  But as each phase of construction happens, there are many parts moving to accomplish the project goal. And sometimes materials and labor are still on Covid-19 time and out of everyone’s control.  So, when the drywall crew gets sick and pushes the installation date or your new dishwasher becomes backordered for delivery, grace and understanding will go a long way and we default back to “Communication is key”.  “My#1 goal is for the homeowner to love their project in the end. So, we need to address all final punch-list items, including those delayed items, to be sure they’re fully satisfied before we close out the project”, says Paul.  “When getting to the end of the job, the homeowner can’t wait to have their home back to themselves, and we are looking forward to getting the project wrapped up, too!”
