2024 Remodeling Trends You’ll Want To Incorporate In Your Home

Last year we peered into our crystal ball and saw several fabulous nature-inspired, sustainable and multi-functional home design trends for 2023 that we were sure you’d want to steal. This year, we’re back again, but with even more! So, are you ready for some fresh new changes to your home?

Gleam your eyes below for a first look at a few of the trends that will shape home design and remodeling in 2024. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Building Materials & Design

Utilizing sustainable and eco-friendly building materials has been a growing trend for several years now. Not only are these materials good for our environment by reducing energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions, harvesting these sustainable materials actually leads to much less waste. Simply put, sustainable and eco-friendly equals less negative impact on our environment, and who doesn’t love that? But it goes further… Sustainable design and decor are also making a big statement in 2024. Homeowners are flocking to interior design elements like kitchen cabinets made of recycled materials, flooring made of cork and energy-efficient lighting solutions throughout their interior and exterior spaces.

There are also, surprisingly, several health benefits to utilizing sustainable and eco-friendly materials and design throughout your home.

  • Utilizing non-toxic materials for improved air quality in your home, like the interior and exterior paint sources, Backdrop, which are low-VOC, Green Wise certified, and low-odor, minimize harmful chemical exposure. In addition, utilizing organic, sustainable and eco-friendly home cleaners can lead to better indoor air quality, likely reducing respiratory issues and other health problems.

  • Energy Efficient Appliances and lighting lead to lower energy consumption reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a healthier plant, which means healthier outdoor experiences for you.

This year, the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly materials and design is our headliner, a trend we see only growing over time!

Let In The Light

You know what’s in and will make a much larger statement in 2024? Natural light. That’s right, homeowners are leaning into letting the light into their homes. Dark and dingy is out, light is in. But we’ll be honest, we’ve always liked letting in natural light. Window placement, material, design and window size have all become important aspects of home remodels. And, there are several benefits to allowing more natural light in your home.

  • We’re starting with our favorite… houseplants. And if you don’t know the benefits of houseplants, let us tell you. Houseplants boost mood, increase creativity, reduce stress, eliminate air pollutants, boost home appearance, and smell incredible. Sold? Good. Back to the light. Letting in more light allows for more variations of plants in your home, which we already proved invaluable.

  • Natural light helps save money on your electricity bill. Allowing more energy-efficient windows throughout your home means less need for artificial light.

  • Natural light actually improves your productivity and reduces stress and anxiety. So, put down those antidepressants, just get more windows in your home. We kid, but it’s comforting to know that one small change to your home can help lower stress and anxiety and boost productivity.

  • Increases your home's value - yes, we are telling you that homes with beautiful windows that let in the light sell for much more. So, bring in the light!

Maximalism

This one was on our list last year, and it’s on our list again this year. The opposite of minimalism, maximalism is an aesthetic of excess. In 2024, we expect to see personalized spaces with bolder statement pieces, layered patterning, and a real sense of playfulness. You know what they say, “More is more!” Expect to see more of this fun in 2024!

Live Outdoors… But Inside

Another word for bringing the outdoors inside, is Biophilic design. Living in Colorado, this means something. Being outdoors elevates a human's existence and overall health in ways unimaginable. It’s why we honed in on houseplants and natural light when we discussed bringing more natural light into your home. There is just something about incorporating elements from the outdoors into your living space that profoundly impacts mental health and overall well-being. This trend was popular this year, and will be even more popular in 2024 with homeowners bringing nature into every room through recycled materials and natural elements like reclaimed wood, plants and sunlight. Bringing your favorite outdoor elements into your home by designing and remodeling your home around what brings you zen, will only make you fall even more in love with your home!

Multifunctional Rooms

Landing on our 2023 trends list, multifunctional rooms are back again, with a vengeance. But, like, a good one! Multipurpose rooms are a hot trend for 2024 and a great solution for homeowners looking to use their space effectively and efficiently. We understand this trend so well that we even wrote a blog about it. Check out, Setting Up Multifunctional Rooms for room combination ideas to help you live large, no matter your home’s square footage.

Deep Colors & Handcrafted Pieces

In 2024, we expect to see deeper hues of color, whether it's with wallpaper or a bold accent wall, deeper greens, deeper blues and burnt colors will certainly make their mark. One of our favorites from Backdrop paint, “Kismet” is a dutch dark green that brings life to any accent wall or fireplace. In fact, consider a shiplap fireplace feature wall with electric insert painted with Backdrop Kismet paint and a gorgeous natural wood mantle - you won’t be disappointed.

If you're not ready to commit to high-impact walls, add color with accessories! Switch up your throw pillows or paint your island a different color than your kitchen cabinets. Whatever the case, deep gorgeous colors are IN! And be sure to check out our blog, How to Choose The Right Color Palette For Your Home, to familiarize yourself with color theory which will help your house-painting journey.

Another very important element in 2024 will be handcrafted pieces of art and furniture. Sure, IKEA is fabulous, but investing in custom built cabinetry, furniture and art not only supports local artisans, it also means your home is truly, one-of-a-kind. You’ll appreciate the craftsmanship, character, and uniqueness of each piece and will appreciate your home even more than you already do. So, get out to your local farmers market, artisanal market, or local furniture / custom designer to check out. We promise that you’ll love the culture and purpose behind the art.

Home Spa-Oasis

The bathroom is undoubtedly among the most used spaces in any home. It should be a place you enjoy! 2024 is the year to take your home bathroom from blah to SPA. Smart Homes

As technology advances each day exponentially, we’re seeing more homeowners incorporate “smart” devices to automate tasks and allow remote access. These hubs let you control your lighting, temperature, security and entertainment with your phone, and can be installed during a traditional remodel. Think convenience when considering the technology you’d like to incorporate. Do you want voice-controlled lights? How about automated window treatments? Whatever the case, enhance your living space with accessible smart devices that bring great control, comfort, and convenience.
