Double Duty: Setting Up Multifunctional Rooms

With kiddos going back to school and parents still working remotely, there’s no better time to consider maximizing your home’s space.

In the wake of COVID, a versatile interior is essential. For those not living in sprawling estates, multipurpose rooms are a great solution for homeowners looking to use their space effectively and efficiently. Think: kitchens are used for dining and homework stations; home offices double as guest bedrooms.

Of course, every room serves its own function. Your first step is determining the kind of space you need. Will you use it for dining, working, socializing, relaxing? What about working and dining? Socializing and relaxing?

There are many areas with crossover uses, and that’s precisely where multifunctional rooms come in! Take a look at our list of room combination ideas to help you live large, no matter your home’s square footage.

Garage

Given their limitless potential, garages are one of the most popular choices for dual-purpose rooms. Your new bonus room can be relaxing and entertaining, social and productive, or all of the above!

Transform your garage into:

  • A living space

  • Extra entertaining space

  • A game room

  • A home gym

  • An office

  • A home theater

  • A man cave

  • Makeshift mudroom

  • Home for hobbies

  • Storage

  • And beyond!

What’s fun about garages is they can often be converted into indoor/outdoor spaces, allowing for natural air and light, weather permitting.

Remember: When it comes to garages, it’s critical to provide healthy air circulation year-round with air purifiers, space heaters, and the like. Our experts will ensure you have everything you need to get the most out of your new room.

Wet Room

There’s no better place to relax!

A wet room is an entirely open, waterproof shower room where water runs to a drain directly into the floor. Okay, we admit that you might immediately think of a gym locker room - gross, it’s not that, but the concept is similar.

Picture a shower without a curb or shower pan that is sharing the main bathroom floor or designated shower area. Without noticing, the floor is gently sloped towards a drain, which is usually situated near a wall. This shower area is completely tanked (waterproofed) with a special underlayment membrane and tiled floor-to-ceiling.

Designs are limitless! The shower can be open to the rest of the bathroom with no shower door. Or it may have a glass panel separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom, but still giving that wide-open feel. Or the shower may have floor-to-ceiling glass enclosure and be accompanied by the bathtub inside… perfect for splashing kids!

For examples, check out these wet rooms we created for our customers…

Wet rooms are an excellent option for smaller bathrooms as the open layout makes the space more functional and appear larger. Not only a fan of those with accessibility needs, a wet room can double as a steam room giving you a tranquil, spa-like oasis in the comfort of your home.

There are many benefits of incorporating a wet room into your remodel. But ultimately, this style of a multifunctional room is gorgeous, stylish, and fits into open-concept designs that are popular today.

Dining Room & Kitchen Workspaces

For many families, the formal dining room is a thing of the past. Rather than reserve an entire space for special occasions, holidays or one meal-a-day, convert yours into a stylish and functional office/dining room combo. Your opportunities are endless!

What about a massive kitchen island? Like a dining table, this is the perfect spot for your kiddos to set up for school work while you prepare dinner. Even better, you can use the same for weekend projects. Having an incredible island allows you to make memories every hour of the day.

Home Office & Guest Bedroom

It's a home office; it's a guest room — it's both! The beauty of this option is that both rooms require a certain amount of privacy, making them easy to combine.

For this mashup, we recommend ditching the classic office-style furniture for comfortable hybrids: a stylish but comfortable chair, floating shelves, cabinets with flair, etc.

With the right pieces, like a daybed or murphy bed, your home office can easily double as a cozy retreat for guests - or your new favorite nap spot!  Some murphy beds are even equipped with a desk attached to the outside when closed. Then in one easy motion, hides your desk mess underneath the bed when opened.

The “Cloffice”

If hosting isn’t a priority, a “cloffice” may be a better fit for you! A cloffice is an office that doubles as your closet. It is the ultimate slice of personal space, providing you with a work area, incredible storage, and a space to get ready each day.

The best part about a cloffice is it can be any size, not just a spare room or spacious walk-in. You can convert even the smallest area into a dedicated work-from-home space. All your hanging clothes aren’t just waiting for wear! They serve as sound insulation for some of the best podcasters do their recordings in their “cloffice”.  Who knew?

Laundry Room

Don’t let any unused space go to waste! If you have a laundry room, add a workstation with a chair for DIY projects, crafts, and other tasks you prefer not to do in your living room. And when it's time to take a break from crafting (or folding laundry), just close the door to hide from guests.

Another option is a laundry room-pantry. Both rooms are often small areas requiring organization and storage—why not combine the two?
