We absolutely LOVE experiencing fall in Colorado. And, we aren’t alone - folks from all over the world flock to Colorado during the fall to experience all our beautiful state has to offer. From the autumn colors that blanket the majestic rocky mountains to the crisp air and fall smells, you can pack the next few months with fantastic road trips, scenic hikes, exceptional camping, and mountain town adventures.
COLORado - you see what we did there? While there are several other states in the union that boast their very own gorgeous fall spectacular, to us, there is nothing like Colorado. Perhaps it’s our altitude, or maybe it’s the simple fact that in the US there is nothing like the Rocky Mountains. Whatever you think, the Aspen’s that blanket our mountains and display the most beautiful shades of gold cannot be beat.
A few years back we shared a few of our favorite road trips around Colorado. And while these can be done at any time, we like them best during our autumn months. We’re sharing them again!
Kelly’s Favorite Mountain Pass Loop - Click for Google Map Route
First stop - Kenosha Pass
Be prepared to whip out your camera to capture those golden Aspen trees!
Second stop - Cottonwood Pass
You’ll see lots of colorful aspen groves as you head over the Continental Divide, which sits at 12,126 feet. Once at the top, take in the 360 degree views.
Third stop - Kebler Pass
This will arguably be the best spot to view the fall Aspens. The Aspen grove on the west side of the pass is known for the largest living organism in the world! https://www.5280.com/colorado-by-nature-the-worlds-largest-living-organism/
You’ll also pass through Gunnison National Forest. If you have a moment, stop by Three Lakes Trail for a 3.4 mile hike.
Fourth stop - McClure Pass
Panoramic views that are out of this world! Stop at the crest of McClure Pass to enjoy a 4.5 mile hike along the Ragged Mountain Road.
Fifth stop - Glenwood Springs
You’re there, so why not take a moment to soak up the soothing minerals from the Glenwood Hot Springs!
Sixth stop - Vail Pass
Vail is an amazing spot to stop at on your return to normal life. Stop by the village for an afternoon lunch and wine or simply stroll through the shops supporting the many local businesses.
The San Juan Loop via Blue Mesa - Click for Google Map Route
This is our southwest Colorado road trip loop which includes amazing stops like Durango, Ouray, and Silverton. The San Juan mountains don’t disappoint... It is grandeur everywhere! That is why this area is known to be the “Swiss Alps of America”. If you are feeling really adventurous check out the Cascade Canyon Express to experience the world famous Durango and Silverton canyon views.
The West Elk Loop
This loop connects Carbondale, Gunnison and Hotchkiss and is known for its wilderness views. This route starts in Carbondale and ends in Sapinero and takes about 10 hours to complete. Take a minute to visit the town of Crested Butte with a stop in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. You can also enjoy salmon and trout fishing activities on the giant Blue Mesa Reservoir. Check out more to do on this loop by clicking here.

Ah, fall camping… What is there not to love about snuggling up near a campfire with marshmallows ready for roasting? If you’re hoping to catch the fall colors but want to spend more time outside than on a hike, fall camping is the way to go. While we love all camping, there are locations throughout Colorado where you can catch peak fall foliage.
