Featured Remodel #2318 by Project Manager, Chase Babcock

And we’re back! This time we’re focusing on a recent home remodel in Ken Caryl, Colorado that proved to be quite colorful in regards to the challenges we faced after opening up walls. As we’ve said before, you never really know what obstacles may arise and What lurks behind the wall can be either a great surprise or a challenging opportunity. In this case, it was both! We love a good challenge and are always pleased by how proactive our team is in solving surprises. So let’s dive in, shall we?

This home renovation, located in Ken Caryl, Colorado, was a main level remodel. Our team beautifully renewed the kitchen, dining room, living room, fireplace, powder bathroom, laundry room, and staircase. This remodel, designed by Denver Design Group, truly brought the outdoors inside with the stunning brick on the fireplace, wood tones throughout, and open layout allowing for more natural lighting. We love that our client decided to invest in the home they have and trusted in Maverick to deliver.

This remodel was a doozy but in every good way. We did say we love a good challenge, and this home delivered surprises. This first challenge? Asbestos.

During our pre-construction service, we discovered asbestos in the home’s drywall compound confirmed by an EPA approved testing firm. While it wasn’t terrible overall, a professional abatement company was first on scene to help make the home safe and free of asbestos for the homeowners and our project work area. After receiving the asbestos clearance report, our team could then go to work.

Next, to make the design plans into reality. In our pursuit to create an open concept, which consisted of blowing out a wall existing between the kitchen and dining room, we discovered that the house had actually shifted off its foundation causing a big gap between the foundation and main level. Fortunately, the home had already settled over many years so there wouldn’t be any additional shifting. With the big gap being a major problem, our team went to work with a solution. We ventured underneath the home, cut up the subfloor, and put in blocking to cover up the gaps in the foundation. Unfortunately, gaps in the foundation of a home do mean that outside critters can get in - and at one time, they had definitely found a hiding place at this property. Before covering the gaps, we made sure this space was completely clean.

Another challenge we faced had to do with the overall measurements of the cabinets within the design of the kitchen. Some changes occurred in the upper cabinets and as such, the original hood would no longer fit. Our team jumped into action and got a brand new custom hood that would match the specs that were needed, and therefore, creating a flawless look. Speaking of cabinets, our friends at Home Clearance Center offer custom color options for their cabinetry, which provided our clients with a gorgeous seafoam blue island. We absolutely love it!

As we completed the projects, our client expressed that they wanted a full furnace and AC cleaning so everything felt new and clean. When doing this cleaning, the HVAC cleaners discovered mold in the trunk, which meant that mold was being circulated throughout the entire house. Being presented with an entire trunk replacement meant that we would likely need to remove drywall. But in true Maverick form, we found a way! Working with a company that specializes in HVAC, we were able to replace everything seamlessly, without any tear-out, and had it done within 3 days!

We strive to do things right the first time, and we are happy to have discovered and corrected issues within this home, like pinched copper pipes we found in the ceiling. Not only giving our customer a beautiful finished remodel, but solving core building matters provided our homeowners added confidence in our work.

We absolutely loved renewing this home! This was a substantial main level remodeling project including additional painting and renewing the flooring on the upper level. We loved working with these homeowners on this project and we are looking forward to our next remodeling project with them. A repeat customer is the greatest compliment we can receive!
